Clitheroe Castle Museum is currently holding an exhibition called Lancashire in 50 Objects – Roman Gemstones.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the formation of the modern county council and museum service our conservation and collection team have curated a selection of 50 Lancashire objects. We will be exploring the history of Lancashire, its people, places and traditions through 50 objects in our collections.
These gemstones (above) were found during excavations of the Roman bathhouse in Ribchester, Lancashire. The incised stones known as intaglios were originally set into rings before they were lost in the bathhouse drains almost 2000 years ago.
The Castle Museum is open every day from 17 February 2025 through to 31 March 2025 between 12:00 & 16:00. Normal admission charges apply – Adults £5 and children up to 18 go free – no booking required. The Castle Museum is about a 10 minute walk from the station and interchange (with some hills) and there are plenty of places to get something to eat and drink in Clitheroe itself.
