Clitheroe Castle Museum Festival of Archaeology, 11 – 27 July 2024

From pottery to armchair archaeology and bookable sessions for budding young archaeologists the museum is set for a fortnight of fun and discovery!

There’s still time to book your place for, “Teeth Tell Tales” with Dr Allison Stewart (11 July 6-7pm) and our Neolithic Pottery Workshop & Talk with Dr Rick Peterson (16 July 6-7.30) plus our main festival hub day is not to be missed.

Archaeology Festival and Community Hub Day 20 July 11:00 to 15:00.  Free event, drop in throughout the day.

A special day celebrating all things archaeological. Meet local archaeologists and experts who will be on hand to answer your questions and share their knowledge. There will be specialists in a range of eras from prehistory all the way to the industrial era, and in a variety of fields like artefact conservation and archaeological technologies. Portable Antiquities Lancashire and Cumbria with be with us too so bring along your own discoveries.

Find out how community archaeologists are contributing to our knowledge about the Romans in the Ribble Valley, get hands-on and learn how to do First-Aid for Finds with our conservators. Listen to students tell you what it’s like to study archaeology at university and find out what new insight we have about life at Clitheroe Castle since new archaeological work has been done at the keep.

Young archaeologists can check out the ‘Corner of Curiosity’ and ‘Rooms of Discovery’  – fun zones where kids can play ancient games, discover artefacts in a dig pit and dress-up in historical costumes.  There’s archaeology-themed crafts and activities plus earn a Junior Archaeologist certificate and sticker by completing a checklist of archaeology-themed tasks.
