CR Week 2023 – Miscellany

As well as the events that have already appeared on the news pages of the website there were a number that also took place during Community Rail Week 2023.

Monday 22nd May 2023

Feel Good Field Trip – Food Sorcery – CRL’s David Savage took 35 pupils from Holden Lane Primary school in Stoke-On-Trent on a train journey to Stockport. The group had a rail safety session before getting on the train. Once at Stockport the group boarded a coach for the short journey to Food Sorcery, Didsbury. The children watched a demonstration by a trained chef and then were split into two groups, one group cooked a paneer curry and the other flat breads. the groups then switched over before eating their lovely creations for lunch. Feel Good Field Trips is a project supported by Avanti West Coast.


Burnley Manchester Road Deaf Community Group 
– for the past 6 months CRL has hosted a Deaf Community group at Burnley Manchester Rd station. This has been a great opportunity for members of the Deaf community to learn about what Northern Trains has in place to support them access the rail network in their local area and take part in a series of journey planning workshops with CRL officer Katie Douglas. The session was the last formal meeting and was an opportunity to reflect and discuss what the group would like to do next.

Wednesday 24th May 2023

South Fylde Line Launch of Time Capsule and Shifting Sands Exhibition at St. Anne’s Station – the Time Capsule was available for people to see and a few of the items which might be going in it. Nicky Thompson, who designed the ‘Shifting Sands’ posters, was in attendance for the relaunch of the artwork at St Anne’s station and some of the art work will be installed at other stations along the line.

 

Feel Good Field Trip – Guardian Newspaper, London – 24 students from Harris CofE Academy in Rugby travelled on Avanti to London Euston. The group walked to the Guardian Head Office. The group then got to walk through the working office of the Guardian on the way to the education room. The group has a morning session learning about the history of the newspaper and how reporting news has changed then learned how to spot fake news in the afternoon session. Students had plenty of opportunities for discussions, working in groups and presenting their ideas. Lunch was provided in the canteen. Feel Good Field Trips is a project supported by Avanti West Coast.

 

Thursday 25th May 2023

West of Lancashire CRP – East Meets West – Shahiesta Raja led the ‘Stations of welcome’ group on  train journey from Accrington to Burscough Junction and then walking from Burscough to Rufford along the Rufford branch of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal for refreshments at Tastebuds Café, Rufford.


Feel Good Field Trip – Fell Foodie
– 20 students from Monks Coppenhall Academy in Crewe travelled to Oxenholme then were transported by minibus to Gummer’s How. The group then meet Fell Foodie (Harrison Ward) for a guided walk up the fell. Harrison talked with the group about the Lake District and how hiking and cooking has improved his mental health. Pupils then helped Harrison prepare lunch before cooking fajitas over a camping stove. Feel Good Field Trips is a project supported by Avanti West Coast.

 

Friday 26th May 2023

Accrington College – Careers Session – CRL’s David Savage hosted 30 year 10 students at the bunker before moving onto Accrington College for them to find out about some of the courses they offer which include rail maintenance, bricklaying, painting & decorating.
