Volunteers at St Anne’s station have been out in force this week erecting their wooden Christmas trees along the platform and on the station approach.
The trees, made from discarded pallets were constructed by several volunteers over the last few years. This year most of them have had some refurbishment and they are now on display suitably adorned. The pallets for the ‘trees’ cost nothing and with just some glue, a few screws and a coat of fence paint they are quick and easy to produce.
Squires Gate and Ansdell & Fairhaven stations also have displays of the pallet-based trees with each group of volunteers putting their own creative mark on them.
Chairman of the St Anne’s station group Tony Ford said
‘Although we can’t have streamers and flashing lights at stations for safety reasons, these wooden trees, created from discarded pallets, give a festive look to our award-winning station. We hope to repeat the scheme in 2023 and we’d like to involve school and community groups in decorating the trees. This year we’re still mindful of COVID but hope to continue involving our community partners. Unsurprisingly the offcuts from the construction of the trees are being used to keep our volunteers with open fires warm too!’
