Stations Of Welcome Featured On TV

Accrington’s station adoption group, Stations of Welcome was recently featured on the BBC’s religious affairs programme, Sunday Morning Live.

The BBC contacted Northern and Community Rail Lancashire after seeing an article in a local newspaper about the only South Asian Muslim women’s group that has adopted a station in the country. They sent over their team in November to visit the group and follow them as they do their usual jobs around the station on a Tuesday morning.

The interviewer, Abigayle Andre, spoke to various members of the group as well as CRL’s Education Officer, Shahiesta Raja about how the group began and what volunteering at the station means to the women. As it was a programme that focuses on faith there were many questions about how Islam plays a role in the way the group works and why it important for Muslims to look after their environment.

It was a very positive feature and it was very much needed after a summer of negativity. It shows how community rail can bring people together in a real example of community cohesion.
