Amazing Women

Amazing Women – more correctly Discover Amazing Women by Rail is a project that was launched on 27th March 2018 and invites people to leave the car at home and use the train (along with buses and trams) to explore the fascinating, and often hidden, histories of women who lived and worked along the Mid Cheshire and Calder Valley railway lines and also including the route from Blackburn to Manchester via Todmorden.

A 40 page booklet has been produced that tells the stories of thirty-two amazing women and this can be downloaded using this link: Amazing Women by Rail

Page 26 features a lady called Ethel Carnie Holdsworth (1886 – 1962) who was born locally in Oswaldtwistle and lived and started her working life in the mills of Great Harwood. A good friend of Community Rail Lancashire, Huckleberry Films have created a short video about Ethel’s life and this can be seen by clicking on the video below:

A new page has been created on the CRL website called Amazing Women and hopefully more details and videos will be added shortly – the page can be found on Amazing Women
