At a recent meeting a lady from a friends of station group was bemoaning the fact that the railway was littered with acronyms and as a ‘non-railway background’ person she had difficulty understanding many of them. So we have decided to help by creating a list of some frequently used acronyms.
So what is an acronym? The dictionary says:
Acronym from the Greek akros (outermost) + onoma (name) (n) from a series of initial letters, or parts of words, for example JVC for Japanese Victor Company.
Some acronyms are treated as words in their own right and are written in lower case, such as scuba and radar (self contained underwater breathing unit & radio detection and ranging)
So let’s click the link ACRONYMS to see the list! Please feel free to send in your additions and comments to communityraillancashire.crl@gmail.com
