Half Term Art Sessions At Haworth Art Gallery

It was ‘All Aboard’ for a special half term Drop-in Family Art Club at Haworth Art Gallery on Wednesday 18th & Thursday 19th February with the free sessions inspired by Diane Muldowney’s Railway 200 Forged in Steam exhibition, which is on until 4th April 2026.

Families were able to join artists, Gosha Gibek and Diane Muldowney in creating railway photography inspired artwork using negatives and train lino artwork using Diane’s steam trains, and taking part in a giant colouring puzzle showcasing the use of the Old Baxenden Railway and Hyndburn Greenway to get to the gallery by foot or bicycle.

Gillian Berry, Arts & Heritage Manager said “We were delighted to be hosting two FREE artist led family drop-in sessions at Haworth Art Gallery during half term. The first delivered by artist Gosha Gibek and the second by artist and documentary photographer Diane Muldowney. The sessions encouraged families to be creative, work together, learn and most of all have fun. This work has been made possible by working with partners helping the museum to fulfil its mission and values.”

Richard Watts, Chair, Community Rail Lancashire explained: “These family events have been designed to excite families not only in viewing the steam engines of today through Diane’s fabulous photography, but we hope, will be inspired to take many trips by train.  We are also delighted to encourage the use of the Old Baxenden Railway Line and Hyndburn Greenway to view this famous Gallery from our local stations of Church and Oswaldtwistle and Accrington… it really is an unexpectedly lovely aspect up to the gallery.”

Ian Davis Community Rail Support and Development Officer (North of England), Community Rail Network said: “It’s great that we have been able to contribute funding from the Department of Transport’s Community Rail Development Fund with partners to this impressive exhibition and the activities at Haworth Art Gallery. To see so many families visiting Diane’s steam railway photographs and the people behind them who keep them operating is fantastic. It’s great to see families having fun creating art inspired by the railways.”

The continuation of this project has been part funded by the Community Rail Network through the DfT’s Community Rail Development Fund, Community Rail Lancashire, Northern Railway’s Community Project Fund & Lancashire County Council’s Active Travel Scheme.
